Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L Hackintosh Home Theatre PC
  • OK guys - 2nd Kakewalk build, pain-free apart from sound which is now working! Have a look at the spec list:

Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L G41 Socket 775 VGA 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard

    Crucial 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory CL6 1.8V

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz Socket 775 1333FSB 4MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Antec NSK 2480 MATX Desktop Case Black & Silver - With 380W EarthWatts PSU

Western Digital WD5000AADS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache - OEM Caviar Green

MSI 8400GS 512MB DDR2 DVI VGA Out PCI-E Graphics Card

    Pioneer DVR-A18LBK 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM

All straight forward, although BIOS settings a bit fiddly as no AHCI mode available, meaning that it has to be USB install as per kakewalk instructions. Sound achieved by running this installer (Azalia Audio) for the sound chip http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=156 - I needed to run it twice and reboot to get it to work.

This thing is great - quiet case, the processor is pretty great and I got all of this for about £370 from Ebuyer UK. Running Plex and XMBC on to HDTV- AWESOME!
  • Why do you need Q8300 and 4Gb RAM for a home theater setup? Sounds like an overkill, imo.
  • I'm using this to encode videos as well, so the extra processor oomph helps - unless you want to wait two hours for a DVD to rip. Not saying that you have to use this processor - just a personal choice and it was only £20 more than a standard Core 2 duo.

I was also thinking that once Ati 5770 support comes in it will make a nice gaming rig- especially as these cards run a lot cooler than the 4xxx series, are less power hungry, and have DX11 support. The potential to use this HTPC for gaming as well was another reason to go for a slightly better processor.
  • did you have any problems with onboard ethernet, if that's what you're using?
  • None at all. Are you having problems?
  • problems galore. had it working perfectly after a deal of trouble with getting ethernet to work, then moved the computer and it wouldn't connect to the internet, kept pulling 169 self assigned ip. after awhile i formatted and started from scratch, and i haven't had it working since. self assigned ip, 169.xxx, no link lights on the ethernet port.

The specs for your board say you have the RLT8111E lan chipset. The official RealTek kext file doesn't support 64 bit kernel or sleep. If you want onboard lan, lnx2mac has ported a kext fron the linux driver for the 81xx chipsets that works great in 32 & 64 bit and also supports sleep. You can find it here: http://lnx2mac.blogspot.com/2010/09/lnx ... -goes.html
Be sure to delete the RTL1000.kext and/or the RTL1000SL.kext from S/L/E that kakewalk installed and any other ethernet drivers you might have tried in S/L/E and in /E or /E/E, put lnx2mac's kext n S/L/E, repair permissions and rebuild caches (I use pfix for this - can be found under tools at kexts.com) and reboot. You should have no further problems with ethernet.
  • Going Bald, thanks so much for the reply. i'm going to reformat/partition and reinstall and then try the kext you suggested. i will reply back here with the results.

    thanks again
  • okay, formatted and reinstalled, deleted the realtek kexts that kakewalk installed.
moved suggested kext to s/l/e and ran pfix. rebooted. said ethernet not connected. ran pfix again. rebooted again.
unit came up and said "no boot device, insert boot disk and press enter"
    powered down, unplugged, reset board.
booted up, saw the link light on my switch light up, ran down the hallway giving high fives to coworkers.

thanks very much for that, i've spend a sleepless 72 hours trying to remedy the problem.

  • i will, though i've come across the same problem, after installing final cut i shut down and moved the tower into the office that it was going to stay in, and when i connected all up and powered on, i was back to no ethernet connection. guess i'll have to start over, i really can't figure out why it keeps working until it's moved and then i can't connect to save my life, but i guess it's just one of those things i'll never understand. thanks again for the help and i'll be sure to buy lnx2mac a cup of coffee.

Can you go into preferences and set it up manually? Or does profiler even show it's there?
Maybe it's just sulking because it doesn't like its new location - did you provide a nice desk with a view? lol
  • haha! it did go from a corner office to a cubicle, maybe it is upset.

i set it up manually and it will say connected but not pull any data and diagnostics still says ethernet has failed, can't ping it, etc. got it working after replacing the kext again and i just plan on leaving it there.
