G41M-ESL2 Mountain Lion GM install Crash
  • Created USB stick according installation instruction, no problem. Boot PC from usb stick and install without any problems. After install reboot from USB, select new install disk and OSX crashes

    G41M-ESL2 Geforce 8400GS 512 MB Kakewalk 4.5

    Machine runs Lion flawlessly

    Any suggestions how to handle

    Thks, John

  • When you reach the bootloader try booting with the following flag: -v Just select your target and enter "-v" (without the quotes) and hit enter. This will start OS X in a verbose mode so that you can what's actually going on. Let me know what it says when it crashes.

  • No vissable crash this time, boot hangs Last line is : [IOBluetoothHCIController][start] -- completed

No Bluetooth dongle present at installation time

    John

  • Try booting with the safe mode flag: -x

  • Boot in Safe mode works. Did the second part of the Kakewalk install procedure and rebooted from harddisk. Same crash as before Reboot with safe mode works and gives me the graphical desktop\

Is there a log file somewhere with more info about the crash ?

  • System Logs found but I am unable to read them, not enough knowledge, I don't know where to llok

    John

  • It seems that it might be an issue with your graphics card. Apparently it requires a little extra effort to get it working.

Try this: Open 'About this Mac' -> 'More Info' -> 'System Report' -> 'Graphics/Displays'. Write down the Vendor ID (eg 0x10de ommit the 0x part) and the Device ID (eg 0x00a2 ommit the 0x part).

Open the following file in a text editor: /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV50Hal.kext/Contents/Info.plist.

Find IOPCIPrimaryMatch, then string and add this to the end 0x + DEVICE ID + VENDOR ID &0xffe0ffff (should look similar to this 0x10c010de&0xffe0ffff)

    Save and then reboot

  • Vendor ID : Nvidea 0x10de

    Device ID : 0x06e4

    Tried :

    1)  0x06e410de&0xffe0ffff

    2) 0x10c010de&0xffe0ffff  ( Syntax of other entry's in plist file )

Both of them resulted in a crash

  • any suggestions

    Thks,  John

  • Have you tried setting GraphicsEnabler=Yes to No in com.chameleon.Boot.plist in your /Extra folder?

  • Same thing. Installation goes fine and I can apply Kakewalk till the end telling it was success.

Upon reboot and apple logo everything goes blank and no signal to screen. HDD moving as usual.

Installed 6 times but after apply kakewalk either KP or black screen and no signal out to monitor.
ESL2 Mobo + 9800GT worked perfect till recent Lion updates.

Always thanks for your hard work.
  • GraphicsEnabler set to yes

    Gives same result

Is there a video card that works for sure so I can buy that one

     Thks, John

  • Got Videocard working

Suggestion of mrjanek was correct, I did not do it the correct way.

    What I did :

Open 'About this Mac' -> 'More Info' -> 'System Report' -> 'Graphics/Displays'.

Write down the Vendor ID (eg 0x10de ommit the 0x part) and the Device ID (eg 0x06e4  ommit the 0x part).

    Copy /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV50Hal.kext to the desktop

Open it with text editor and go to Info.plist

Find IOPCIPrimaryMatch, then change an existing entry to the value's found ( Vendor and Device id, I used 0x06e410de&0xfff0fff

Download Kextbeast and run ( KextBeast and patched file on the desktop ) .

    Change GraphicsEnabler to Yes

Reboot and it worked for me

  • after install ML boot in safe mode (-x) ,go to system> library> extensions> , you gotta delete 2 kexts: NVDANV50Hal.kext and NVDAResman.kext. then you have to replace them for NVDANV50Hal.kext and NVDAResman.kext from Mountain Lion DP4 reboot . Worked for me.

  • Are these installs using Mountain Lion 10.8.0 or 10.8.1?  I have not installed it yet, and want to know which works better.  No problems with Lion, or Lion updates.  I have a spare HD to test in before I try updating Lion 10.7.4

    GA-G41-ES2L (ver. 1) NOT a G41M-ESL2
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB (same as JohnP)

Stupid question time: How do I boot into safe mode if I'm going to have to edit kexts?  Do I use TextEdit or Terminal?  I have previously not had to edit anything to get Hack to work :  )

  • On first apple input screen enter -x

Method as described worked for me For 10.8 and 10.8.1

I edited the file using textedit

    John

  • ok, I will try as soon as I have 10.8 downloaded.  I have 10.8.1, but I guess I will try 10.8 first.  I will post results and hopefully I get Mountain Lion working.

  • Finally have to time to try this again.  A bit more information might help.  I multi-boot, OS X 10.7.5 / WinXP / Ubuntu 12.04 / Be OS / OS X 10.6.8 ( Using SL volume for Mtn Lion ).  I just updated Lion to 10.7.5 without problems yesterday.  Made backups of SL and Lion.

    1) Made my Kakewalk USB w/ 10.8.  Then reboot Hack.
2)Hack boots to USB, Chameleon set to Kakewalk USB, install screen and finish.  Clean install to volume with Snow Leopard.  Testing it before I try to install in main HDD with Lion.
3)Tells me to reboot to set up name, etc.
4)Boot F12 to choose USB, Chameleon screen, choose ML HDD. (Did not change BIOS yet to boot from ML HDD)  Shows that it is starting to boot to ML, I get the gray screen with the black apple ( different from Lion ).  Seems to be booting and then i get a Kernel Panic.

    EDIT:
    5) Boot prompt was flying by to quickly.  Hit space bar when I see word Boot. (Before you ever see Chameleon screen for others confused like me)
    6) I then get Chameleon screen but its showing gray progress bar below the icons.  Then I get a prompt with " Boot:__________ " where the gray bar was.
    7) Typed " -x " in the space and hit enter.  No hyphens.
    8) Boots into gray screen with black apple.  I then get the rest of the install dialog boxes for Mountain Lion.  Boot into safe mode, seems to be 1024 x 768 since it looks weird on my widescreen monitor.

No internet or sound. Video gets flakey when I tried to see Messages screen or when using Mission control.  I'll see if I can follow the Mr. Janek's directions properly.
