Can't boot into Kakewalk USB to install ML (Gigabyte X58A UD3R Rev 1.0)
  • I successfully created a Kakewalk usb stick with ML that I purchased an hour ago. I followed every step carefully to make sure my BIOS settings were correct, but every time I try to boot into Kakewalk, my computer turns black and reboots. I used Kakewalk in the past to successfully install Lion. I am now preparing to upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, and this is the first time I ran into this issue. I tried pressing down on the arrow keys and typing GraphicsEnabler=No and -v and still reboots.

  • Try it with "GraphicsEnabler = Yes" instead of No and watch for the blanks.

    Maybe that will work, it did for me.
  • I have "boot0 error" or the same problem with blank screen like  ryuukumori, and try all guides without luck.
    I used Kakewalk for 10.6, 10.7 and evering ok until ML.

    Think this is some issue and hope mrjanek will found a solution.
  • I am having the same problem with the X58A-UD3R.  I tried booting Verbose and changing the graphicsEnabler setting, no luck.

    If I boot into the Kakewalk menu and choose the USB installer, the boot starts, then the screen goes black and the PC automatically reboots.

    If I go into BIOS and boot from the USB disk, I get the Kakewalk/Mountain Lion boot menu, I choose to boot to Mountain Lion, I get a white screen with a black Apple logo, then after a while the screen goes completely white and nothign happens.

    Is there an issue with the X58A-UD3R, it seems more than coincidental that two people would have the same issue.

  • Yep, definitely an issue with the board and the USB. I have tried nearly every combination of boot options, and none have worked. Options like:

    GraphicsEnabler=No (with and without -v and -x)
    GraphicsEnabler=Yes (with and without -v and -x)
    PCIRootUID=0
    PCIRootUID=1

    I also went into the kakewalk USB:

    Extra > org.chameleon.Boot.plist

    And tried to edit the plist file in texteditor, where I've seen mrjanek mention to others to try and delete <string>npci=0x3000</string>, but that didn't do anything either. I have also tried typing in npci=0x2000 before trying to boot into the USB, but that also didn't work.

    I'm sure a fix will come out soon, but for now, I'm kinda bummed I bought ML and have yet to get it up and running.

    @iMotion: How did you get your installation to work by simply checking for the blanks? Even when I tried typing in GraphicsEnabler=Yes and -v to see verboso mode, I don't see any blanks. I see the usual kexts going down the screen, but nothing stops. It appears as though the list is finished, then it is followed by a reboot.

    I come to the same conclusion, it could be an issue with EX58-UD3R (2.0), because I tried other solutions and none even pass the “boot0 = error”.
    But, some of users have success stories with this mobo and similar configuration.

    I leave only USB Hdd connected, disabled all in Bios, still the same error.

    With Lion USB installation everything is ok, working smoothly, 10.7.4.

  • I have exactly the same problem with the same board. Did someone found a workaround ??

  • Kakewalk supports this board just fine.  I've used Kakewalk to install Lion and ML on an X58A-UD3R, and TonyMac supports this board as well.

    1. Clear your CMOS (unplug and then press the CMOS clear button on the back), load optimized defaults, then just change the minimum: set your SATA to AHCI, disable unnecessary SATA, and set HPET to 64 bit
    2. After rebooting, hit F12 to select your USB stick, and boot off of it
    3. in the Chameleon boot window, be sure to boot off the stick

    If this does NOT get you to the ML installer (caveat: AMD 6xxx series graphics cards: you need to remove the ATI6000Controller.kext off the USB stick and manually install it post install), then something is wrong with your USB stick. Rebuild the USB stick from scratch, paying careful attention to the steps.  Disk Utility -> partition drive to one partition (I believe GUID or MBR), format as HFS+ journaled; have retail "Install OS X Mountain Lion" in applications; run Kakewalk app to build stick.  Be sure you select the right DSDT/motherboard.

    If all that continues to fail, I would delete the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" app and redownload from the app store, and I would remove any extra peripherals you can.  If by any chance your "Install OS X Mountain Lion" is not from the app store, that's your problem.  You might also try to re-partition the stick to MBR if you were using GUID and vice versa.  I'm on a rev 1.0 with F6 and it supports both but YMMV.
