  • Thank you for the new usb version, mrjanek.... I'll give it a try right away!
  • Thank you very much !!...

This is the method I will use soon.

    I tell you how I'm gone. :D
  • Hi mrjanek

Kakewalk 3.1 does not work with EP45T-UD3LR ???

    Using the guide STEP 7

I get an error message that says "cant find kake_kernel"

So I cannot continue with the installation ???

Where do we go from here

  • Kakewalk 3.1 USB works like a charm!

From Mac OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.6.5 in no time.

    Thank you mrjanek!

    My kudos to you!
  • Hey guys,

I recently ran a system update on my "hackintosh" and during the update, it downloaded the latest update for Snow Leopard: 10.6.5.
    Forgetting to install KakeWalk again.
Now whenever I boot up to my Snow Leopard partition, I can't get past the 'Please restart your computer' Apple Message (AKA, Kernel Panic), written in about 6 different languages.
Here are one pic from the verbose mode (thanks to my iphone).

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance for replies.

    Hi Ray,
Same problem here, but you can fix it yourself.
    Just boot with bootflag:
    mach_kernel -v

After install boot again from USB with: mach_kernel -v, and update to 10.6.5
After update boot again from USB with: mach_kernel -v, and run kakewalk.pkg from USB

Now you can boot from Harddisk and see that everything is working.

Good luck and a great thanks to mrjanek :D
  • Hi mrjanek

Kakewalk 3.1 (USB) is a concern to me, it will put people off using it.

Because of the following : -

    1) You require a Mac or hackintosh (has to be INTEL, I have tried it on a PPC and i cannot get the bootloader to install) to create the USB stick.

This means that the bulk of people who want to try kakewalk are excluded.

    2) the Version 3.1 does not work for several models of motherboard EG : EP45T-UD3LR AND EP45-UD3P.
With the Error " cant find kake_kernel".

    3) I would like you to continue with the CD Version to allow access to a greater range of people.

    4) It takes about 2.5 HOURS to end up with a bootable USB stick, CD version you are up and running in under 10 MINUTES.

The above is meant to be constructive comment NOT criticism.

    Ray
  • I don't know why it took you 2.5 hours to setup using USB, it took me about 30 minutes.

The CD solution is not a great one, people increasingly do not have CD drives (personally I don't own one). The best solution would be to enable building of the USB installer on PCs.
  • I have the following setup:

    Kakewalk 3.0 on P55M-UD2....

I booted with Kakewalk with 3.1 and selected to boot 10.6.5 from my internal HDD (which is already installed). I got:

    "cant find kake_kernel"

So I am not gonna bother removing Kakewalk 3.0 and putting 3.1 instead! Ouch - not good.
  • To all folks getting that "cant find kake_kernel" error. Try this:

On step 7, DO NOT REBOOT after upgrading to 10.6.5! Install Kakwalk.pkg immediately. Then restart normally without the USB stick.
  • Great work!

Would just like to know what OOTB GTX 4XX cards a like..Something like a list with Manufacturer and model would be useful as I'm thinking of upgrading my Palit 9500GT.

    Thanks.

Currently using the EP45-UD3LR and it's perfect.
  • Thanks for the link but I was just wondering what cards are supported OOTB without any tweaking to make this set up even easier.

    Thanks.
  • Can someone give me instructions how to make USB disk with kakewalk 3.1 and Snow Leopard Retail?

    Dear Sir,

I have an successful installation with Kakewalk 2.2. CD method, and now I wish this installation to switch to RAID 0 array (2 Hdds). I searched a lot to various Hackintosh forums, but did not find solution. I found out that this is actually software Raid, but this is better than installation without Raid.
Please inform me is this possible with kakewalk and how to do that(step by step instruction would be great). I found that this would be interesting a lot of people here also since RAID 0 increases Hdd speed and this is crucial for HD video editing and rendering.
thank you very much for great work

Impossible to install directly to raid array - install via Kakewalk on single drive only first, then clone to raid array. See http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi? ... thread=908
  • Any way to use 3.1 without having to get rid of my current 2.2 install and data?
  • [quote="Guest"]Any way to use 3.1 without having to get rid of my current 2.2 install and data?
Kakewalk is an installation aid. If you already have a working system, updated to 10.6.5 and are having no problems, then there is no reason for you to use Kakewalk again at this time - there is no benefit to doing so.
On the other hand, if you are having problems, random crashes, etc. and have decided to re-install from scratch, then back up your data files AND any kext files specific to your motherboard or plug-in hardware (pci cards, dongles, etc.), wipe the HD and re-install with the latest version of Kakewalk, then restore your data files and kext files from back-up.

Don't use Kakewalk for booting a Retail DVD, use EmpireEFI or iBoot or anything else that has NullCPU. And after OSX installation completed use Kakewalk for installing motherboard drivers only. Also, my advice it to avoid using Kakewalk DSDT or TonyMac or any other DSDT downloaded from the internets, patch your own with the following tool: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index. ... pic=235523
  • Hi XLR
    For your Information

During the INSTALL Phase of Kakewalk 3.1 (Usb) NullCPu is included in this phase,

It is NOT installed during the Bootloader to Hard Drive phase.

    Sound – VoodooHDA 2.7.2
    Video – OTB
    Network – OTB
    Restart/shutdowns/CMOS reset fix – OTB
After updating on 10.6.5 in system/library/extensions been creating appleHDA file in -x mode i delete AppleHDA and all continue working. Thanks a lot one more time you best.
  • Great work on this, thank you!

I migrated away after using v2 and started ussing Cartri's BIOS but after the recent closure of the project and some strange things starting to happen with my Mac I figured it was time to wipe it and start clean. I decided to go back to the Gigabyte BIOS and try Kakewalk again. My system is actually noticeably faster now, but that could just be a result of the fresh install. I also went with the Lnx2Mac 81xx driver and my network is faster. Using the Realtek 1000 driver that came with Kakewalk 3.1 I would max out at 44mb during file transfers and it would be very sporadic in its throughput. Using the Lnx driver its much more steady and have reached speeds as high as 59mb.

Either way, everything is working great, but I have one question. Why is my CPU temperature reading about 15* warmer in the OS than in my BIOS?
  • Hi, it installed ok but it doesnt recognice my gtx 275, forcing the resolution to 1024x768. Algo it doesnt recognice my i7 930, instead it recognices it as a Xenon of 4 cores.
  • Thanks mrjanek,

Works well for me with a few quirks. After the initial install from the kakewalk usb with my osx on it I had to ensure that I sat there on reboot and "press any key" and then choose my newly created hard drive before the remainder of the install process would go ahead. However after this and rebooting one more time, Boom! Fantastic!

    Gigabyte EX58-UD4, i7 930, 6gb kingston 1333 ram, Seagate momentus xt 500gb 2.5inch hybrid drive.

Great work! USB installer is my preference but I do feel for the CD crowd. Thanks again for the great work.
  • This might seem like the most ridiculous question but here goes...

I got everything working on my ga-p35c-ds3r using kakewalk 2.2 USB install in safe mode with 10.6.3. Reason being I couldn't finish the USB installer with the newer version.
Then successfully updated no issues to 10.6.5 with software update.

I would like to update my kakewalk to the latest version now that I'm in 10.6.5... Im guessing I could simply run the package on the USB Stick and use it as a booter, but would like for example kakewalk 3.1 booting off my hackintosh partition directly...

Firstly are there any benefits, secondly does it require full reinstall of mac os x??
  • Kakewalk v3.1 did work as promised, made installation super easy. Although I did run into one little small problem after some testing. The OSX was running fine except when I ran my Cinebench test, the video score dropped to less then 15fps and if I install using the other boot cd, retail disc, install drivers, boot info I would get over 25fps.

Other then that it was super easy to use and makes installed OSX a breeze
  • Hi, I have an EP45-UD3P and had working sound with Kakewalk 2.2. After upgrading to 3.1 my on-board sound is gone. I still get sound through USB headphones without issue, but line in, line out, aux in, etc. are all gone. I have tried installing it twice now.

Any ideas what I can do to get my line out back?

    Thanks,
    Phil
  • The above poster didn't see my message... I installed kakewalk 2.2... How do I update kakewalk without reinstalling os x and what are the benefits
  • [quote="Gurdainrayatt"]The above poster didn't see my message... I installed kakewalk 2.2... How do I update kakewalk without reinstalling os x and what are the benefits
There may or may not be any benefits to you. You can tell by looking at the change log:
    Changes:
    v3.1
    - Added drivers for Nvidia “Fermi” cards (Experimental)
    - Added Chameleon 2.0 rc5 r643
    - USB method replacing CD method

    v3.0
    - Added Chameleon RC5 r594
    - Added support for P55-USB3
    - Added Lnx2mac’s Realtek network driver
    - USB method for installation no longer available. (It was too difficult to maintain two versions)

Do you want a different bootloader? Does you ethernet work already?
Do you have a "Femi" (i.e. nVidia GTX 4xxx, 5xxx video card?

If your answers are no-yes-no then there is no need to "update".
But if you want the latest, then go to http://www.kexts.com/cat/2-bootloaders.html to get the bootloader and install it.
Then go here http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=5 to get the nVidia drivers
and finally. go here http://lnx2mac.blogspot.com/p/realtekrt ... river.html to get lnx2mac's network driver
Install all of these and you have updated "Kakewalk" without the need to reinstall.
  • I see. Thank you for your help

My 3870 refused to work properly so I got a 4870 for £55 second hand....

Everything seems to work so the update won't be needed I guess...
  • Hi,

Me and other users of this version have noticed that the benchmarks and performance when installing SL with 3.1 is very low. There is a topic in the postinstallation forum with more details.
  • I just got a successful install on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 rev1. I had the same error come up on reboot after installing the OS on my target drive: "cannot find kake_kernal". As I was poking around, I tried booting off the USB stick, and then selecting the USB stick for boot. Instead of booting the USB stick, it booted the target HD (set to second disk in my boot priority). Once that happened, everything worked perfectly, updated to 10.6.6 with the combo updater (install was 10.6.3), and installed the kakewalk pkg. I'm going to try again tonight to see if I can repeat the process, but since I stumbled onto it and it seemed like a counter-intuitive method, I thought I would share.

Ok, so as I seem to understand it now, when you boot off the USB stick and go into the options, you can select a drive to boot from, and after the message that it cannot find kake_kernel, you can then select a drive that does contain that file, and use it to boot the drive that was first selected. ie: select your hackintosh drive (before installing the kakewalk.pkg), and then select your bootstick to tell it where to find the needed files. I didn't see this in the instructions, but I assume it's just part of my "first time" experience using kakewalk. It's a great installer, and worked perfectly for me. Thanks! :D
  • My experiences with Kakewalk 3.1 on GA-EP43-DS3L.

First a big THANK YOU for the excellent installer!! I'm running 10.6.6 with no problems now.

Here are a few issues and a confusing remark in the installation instructions.

I was confused because after the installation you CAN'T choose the installed Snow Leopard partition because it says "cant find kake_kernel".
You MUST boot from the thumb drive, press a key (you see the thumb drive and the new partition with Snow Leopard) but must NOT choose this partition but the thumb drive again. Then it boots into Snow Leopard (and not from the thumb drive). Without pressing any key it boots from the thumb drive.

After installing 10.6.6, rebooting, and booting into Snow Leopard again I installed the Kakewalk package. I get a nicely running Snow Leopard but: Upon the first boot my mouse (Logitech) and Apple keyboard are NOT found (confirmed twice (I did two Snow Leopard installations)). Instead, a message box pops up saying: Looking for bluetooth devices. Resetting the system is the only option and after booting into Snow Leopard a second time everything is working ok.

    So, in short:
    a) Manual should be altered saying that after the installation (when you boot from the thumb drive) you must press a key, and choose the thumb drive again (instead of the new Snow Leopard partition).
    b) Don't know why my mouse and keyboard are not found after the first proper boot into the system --> fix?

    Wishes:
Can the reboot fix be incorporated into the thumb drive? It's annoying to have to reboot the system manually during the installation and for maintenance issues (where I boot from the thumb drive).

    Cheers
    Mike

  • No luck with G41M-ES2L rev 1.1 using F9 BIOS.

I attempted to use Kakewalk 3.1 to install onto the G41M and I get a kernel panic when booting from the USB device. I have read in another area of this forum that using a 2.x version of Kakewalk works but I am unable to locate older versions for download.

One last question before I try this, does it matter what BIOS version I am using? I have read that DSDT files are BIOS specific from what I understand. I looked on my thumb drive with the kakewalk installed on it and I dont see a DSDT file.

Thanks again for the info, I want to learn as much as I can.
  • Hi everybody,

am a newbie in the Mac world.

Please explain where resides the Kakewalk application in the Kakewalk.zip Archive?

After i unzipped the Kakewalk.zip I tried to find the Kakewalk application but I do not know where it resides.

    Thanks
  • There should be 3 files, changes a text file, guide a pdf and kake walk the installer. If they are not there maybe you should re download it, everything expanded fine for me.
  • Gave it a try today and it looks like the fermi card is an issue, I have read some other threads that have fermi cards and it will not install it just gets to the apple screen and then I get the gray box that says I have to restart. Apparently I can install with another video card and then update to 10.6.6 and it will work but I dont have another card to put in. I hope there is a 3.2 that will work in the future. I like kakewalks clean look.

Thanks for all the hard work and the expert knowledge to put together something like this for people that are learning.
  • I am trying to do fresh install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my i7, P55 chipset machine. I don't have access to Mac at the moment. How do I create bootable bootloader CD to start installation from my OSX disk? Which .iso image do I use?
  • I can't found GA X58-UD3R Rev 2.00 in the Motherboard List...is it ok using the rev 1.?
