boot (system) disk failure after install (ep45-ud3r)
  • I am installing via USB method. Before the install, during bootup, i get a bunch of EBIOS errors, but everything appears to install ok.

However, the first reboot after install, I remove the USB stick and let the system try and boot from the newly installed Snow leopard. however, it get the boot disk failure errors.

Do I need a separate boot loader or did I do something wrong?

    EP45-UD3R v1.1
    9400GT
    8GB Ram
    USB keyboard/mouse
    bluetooth apdatper

    thanks
  • what EBIOS errors? Have you changed HPET to 64 bit and set AHCI mode?

When you downloaded the Kakewalk USB install, did you also download the Kakewalkboot file? You need both. Can you boot into SL with the USB plugged in? If you can, then download the Kakewalkboot file, unzip it, double-click the .pkg and point it to your new SL install disk. Then eject the USB, remove it and reboot. You should be OK, but might have to play with sound and lan - this is normal, especially sound.
  • I do have AHCI enabled and 64bit HPET set. After restoring the SL image to my USB stick I DID install the kakewalk program, choosing my correct motherboard. I am also having this problem with cartri's boot CD.

here is the exact text on the screen at the time of EBIOS errors:

    reading ramdisk image: bt(0,0)/Extra/Preboot.dmg
    no ramdisk config

    mounting done
    EBIOS read error: Device timeout
    Block 0x0 Sectors 0

    EBIOS read error: Device timeout
    Block 0x0 Sectors 0

    EBIOS read error: Device timeout
    Block 0x0 Sectors 0

    EBIOS read error: Device timeout
    Block 0x0 Sectors 0

There is about 90 seconds between each EBIOS error and the hard drive activity light goes on and off the whole time.

You misunderstand me. Yes, so far you have done right as far as installation goes. I am not sure about the EBIOS errors - are you using Cartri's bios? There is another file you need to download to allow you to boot without the USB drive. Since you used Kakewalk for your install, you should go back to http://puru.se/blog/ and look at the last 2 lines under the Kakewalk 2.2 post. The last line is the link to the bootloader file. Download it, unzip it and double-click on the .pkg file to install it. Then you can remove the USB drive and boot without it.

I got these errors before I tried Cartri's bios. I didn't misunderstand you, I just forgot to answer part of your question. From where and when do I install the .pkg file? Right now I cannot get into my SL installation. The Kakewalk bootcd or the USB stick with boot stuff install, will not see my hard drive. (it only icon shown on the screen is the boot cd)

OK, I think I've seen somewhere before the error messages - you have a Samsung DVD-RW, right? If so, ignore them. It has to do with the Samsung firmware and possibly you can go to their website and get an update that may cure the errors, who knows?

For the bootloader, you first have to install SL (you did) and reboot with the USB or boot CD in. AS SOON AS the Darwin timer screen shows up after "Verifying DMA Pool Data.. screen, hit space bar or down arrow before the 3 seconds times out and select the SL install you just did and hit enter. When you get to the desktop again, then you unzip the bootloader, double-click on the .pkg file and select your SL install from the pop-up screen. The bootloader script installs the boot file in root and I think also installs needed kext files in E/E and S/L/E for sound and ethernet NIC's. Once it is complete, you can eject your USB or boot CD, reboot and, if you have your SL drive set as #1 in the HDD boot order, it should boot to the SL after the Darwin timer times out (Since you have problems, I would hit delete to go into BIOS and make sure the SL HDD is first in HDD order). If you don't want to depend on being able to hit it in 3 seconds, you can edit the boot .plist in the E/E folder to either extend the time or, if you set time to zero seconds, when the Darwin timer screen appears it will give you a list of drives and wait for you to select one and hit enter.

Ok, I have a problem with the bolded part. When I hit space bar or down arrow, my only choice is the Boot CD. The Boot CD does not see the Hard drive I installed SL too. This is why I think it may be the hard drive itself. Is there any other reason my hard drive would not be listed as an option????

Ouch! You should see the HDD you installed to along with the Boot CD. Check to make sure the power and data cables are firmly connected. Also, you might remove the side panels from your box and try to hear the HDD spin up when you first push the power button and turn on the system or maybe even put the drive in another system to see if it will see it. If you managed to install to the HDD, I don't see any other cause of not seeing the drive from the boot screen. Has to be either loose cable, bad cable or bad HDD or even (bad, bad me for even thinking it!) a bad port on the mobo. If you can't hear the HDD spinning up or feel it vibrating if you place a finger gently on the end of it try replacing the power cable before buying a new HDD. If it does spin up, try replacing the data cable. Change ports for the data cable. Select the Boot CD and try to install again. If all of these tries fail, then get a new SATA HDD and start over.
  • got it to work...it was the HD. go figure. I bought a new Samsung F3 (500GB)....it's speedy.
