I did a successful snow leapard install (EP45-UD3L) with the excellent GigabyteCD (also by mrjanek) late last year. Everything worked great except for sound (realtek ALC888) and at the time it really wasn't a big deal. Now I'm using the system more and the lack of sound is bugging me. I've tried several fixes found here and in several forums without resolving the issue. I'm wondering if I can just do an update with the latest Kakewalk bootloader (replacing the GigabyteCD stuff) to fix the issue. I'd rather not do a complete reinstall. I am upgraded to 10.6.4. Alternatively, are there any suggested PCI sound cards that work "out-of_the_box"?

Have you updated to 10.6.4? If you have, try installing a kext file like the one available here:
